Childress-Howard Motorsports LLC is a car racing entity of the Crawford Group based in Denver, North Carolina. Childress-Howard Motorsports competes in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series in their Pontiac Crawford DP08 cars.
In January 2008, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) and Howard Motorsports have joined forces as Childress-Howard Motorsports (CHM) to field a Daytona Prototype team for competition in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. The team utilizes the amazing driving talents of Andy Wallace and will be powered by a Pontiac engine in a Crawford DPO8 chassis. Andrew Scriven, whose design talents have proven very successful since the 1980s in the varying disciplines of sports car racing, Indy Car racing and NASCAR, is the chief designer for Crawford Race Cars.
Childress-Howard Motorsports ran a limited number of events in the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car series, and participated in each event in 2009.
Howard Motorsports History:
Howard Motorsports began competing in the Rolex Series Daytona Prototype Class in 2004. In their first two full seasons of competition, Howard Motorsports cars won six races and finished on the podium (top three) a total of eighteen times. The #2 Citgo Pontiac Crawford won the Grand Prix of Miami and the Miami 250 in 2004 at the Miami-Homestead Speedway as well as the 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant at Mont Tremblant, Quebec Canada in 2005. The #4 BOSS Snowplow Pontiac Crawford won the Porsche 250 at the Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama in October, 2004, captured the win at Brumos Porsche 250 at the Daytona International Speedway and the EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Course in 2005. In 2006, the #4 BOSS Snowplow Pontiac Crawford was driven by Andy Wallace and Butch Leitzinger to complete the season with two podiums, finishing second at Infineon and third at Miller Motorsports Park. As a result of their on-track performances, Howard Motorsports teams have won both individual driver and team honors in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. For the 2004 season, Andy Wallace placed third, Milka Duno fifth, and Butch Leitzinger and Elliott Forbes-Robinson seventh in overall driver points. The #2 Citgo team with Wallace and Duno finished third and the #4 BOSS Snowplow Team with Leitzinger and EFR finished fourth in overall team points. In addition, Wallace and Duno won the Sun Trust “Improve Your Position Award” in the Rolex Series in 2004. The Sun Trust Award honors the team who improves their position the most during each race. In 2005, Leitzinger and EFR finished third in overall driver points and the #4 BOSS Snowplow Team placed third and the #2 team placed seventh in team points.
Howard Motorsports created significant media attention in the Rolex Series with their performance and impressive roster of drivers. Drivers Andy Wallace and Butch Leitzinger are co-driving the #20 Pontiac Crawford for the 2007 season at select events along side of team mates Chris Dyson and Rob Dyson who will be competing at six of the major races this season in their new Porsche factory Crawford DP03.However, the roster of drivers who have competed for Howard-Boss Motorsports include sports car racers Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Jan Lammers, Allan McNish, Marino Franchitti, Chris Dyson, Rob Dyson, Oliver Gavin, Guy Smith, and Milka Duno. Indy Racing League drivers Danica Patrick, Dario Franchitti, and 2005 Champion Dan Wheldon, along with NASCAR Champions Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Rusty Wallace, and superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr. have competed in Howard Motorsports cars at selected events.
Childress-Howard Motorsports is blessed with extremely valuable business leadership and Motorsports knowledge. Team principal Rick Howard along with Richard Childress and group co-founders Max and Jan Crawford lead the talented team along with ingenious Crawford Race Cars DP08 designer Andy Scriven, General Manager Trudie Capece, and Aerodynamicist and Crew Chief Catherine Wallace.
The Crawford Group employees seventy people in its modern 48,000 square feet facility in Denver, North Carolina. The Crawford group consists of Howard Motorsports, the car racing entity, Crawford Race Cars, the constructor of racecars for competition in the Grand American Series, and Crawford Composites, the fabricator of carbon-fiber components used in most all of the major Motorsports series, including NASCAR and IRL. The group has been in operation since 1987 and has played a valuable role in the development of several successful racing teams and series.
Childress-Howard Motorsports is poised to build on their existing successful foundation in the Grand American Rolex Series.
