Hour 7
Casey Mears ran a very strong stint in the No. 2 Gentleman Jack Pontiac Crawford. Through nearly 70 laps around the 3.560-mile road course, the Bakersfield, Calif., native ran consistent laps in the 1:44-minute range. He was able to move the Childress-Howard Motorsports entry up two spots, to 32nd, in the running order by the end of his stint, nearing the end of of the seventh our of competition. "We're not bad and I'm having a lot of fun. The Gentleman Jack Pontiac is is not handling the way we want ... there's some understeer through the hairpins but, other than that, we're not bad. It's just unfortunate that we got so many laps down so early. "The strategy we have is the same that probably most teams have which is to stay on the track and not make any mistakes. We obviously want to get back as many laps as we can. I guess I'm still learning the rules a little bit. I pulled out of line on a restart when some cars in front of me stacked up ... I was trying to avoid getting piled up and they penalized me for it so. At the end of the day, if we stay on the track all night and have a good, solid run, hopefully the Gentleman Jack team can learn from the experience and carry it on into the rest of the season.
"We didn't have any electrical problems coming into the event so it was kind of a freak thing. They found a frayed wire near the engine department. It might've happened on an engine change or something like that, but they fixed it, the car's running fine now and there are no issues."
